Between December 2023 and March 2024, the Central African Federation of Evangelical Churches (AEC), with support from WEA Partnership and financial assistance from "Giving Hands" in Germany, helped 70 families establish new livelihoods through vegetable cultivation in Birao. The beneficiaries included approximately 500 children and adults, among them 42 Sudanese refugee families and 28 returnee families. Twenty-seven households were headed by single mothers. The selection process was carried out in close consultation with local authorities and village leaders.
The project included training in soil preparation, sowing and cultivation, the distribution of basic agricultural materials, and practical support from trained farmers during cultivation on a total of 2.2 hectares of land. Each family also received tools and seven different types of vegetables for self-sufficiency.
The initiative improved the food security of the participating families and simultaneously strengthened social cohesion in the community, even across religious boundaries. Due to its positive impact, the AEC plans to expand the project to include more families and to supplement it with measures in the areas of water, education, and psychosocial support.
