After the earthquake – Reconstruction of houses in the Khost province of Afghanistan

Afghanistan is frequently struck by devastating earthquakes because the country lies on several fault lines between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The region has long been affected by seismic activity, particularly in areas near the Hindu Kush mountains, where tectonic plates slide past each other, often causing shallow earthquakes that are even more destructive. In 2022, the provinces of Khost and Paktika were struck by a magnitude 5.9 earthquake that killed over 1,000 people and damaged thousands of homes. The region's vulnerability to earthquakes and the depth of seismic activity further exacerbate the devastation.

Following the 2022 earthquake, Shelter Now International (SNI) launched emergency relief efforts, distributing food and shelter to affected families. Working with local authorities, the organization provided tents and basic foodstuffs such as flour, rice, and oil to 1,150 families. However, the destruction of approximately 4,500 homes in the region left many people without adequate shelter. While UNHCR and several NGOs initiated reconstruction efforts, the overwhelming need for housing prompted SNI and its donor, WEA, to commit to building 30 homes in Khost province. These efforts have been acknowledged by local authorities, but the need for further support remains.

The SNI project faced several challenges, including delays due to bureaucratic hurdles and changing government requirements. Although the project was approved by the government, it stalled for nearly two years due to policy shifts and leadership changes in Khost's economic department. Currency fluctuations and material shortages further complicated the implementation process. SNI adhered strictly to its protocols and refused to be influenced by corruption or bribes, which caused further delays. Despite these challenges, SNI continued its efforts to provide much-needed housing and support to the affected communities and extended the project timeline to address the setbacks.

Testimonials of the beneficiaries

Gul Wali is one of the beneficiaries of this project. He works as a porter in the bazaar and earns between 100 and 300 AFN (1.24 to 4.29 AFN) daily. The 2022 earthquake destroyed his house. For almost two years, he and his family have been living in a tent because he is unable to buy the necessary materials to rebuild. He is very grateful to have been selected as a recipient for the reconstruction of his home. He said, „Thank you so much to SNI and the donors. My whole family will now be able to live a dignified life, as we no longer have to sleep in a tent. I cannot even begin to express the joy I feel. May God bless you even more.“

Freeda is a mother of five. Before the earthquake, they lived in a small, one-room house. Her husband was a tailor, but after the earthquake in Khost, the shop where he worked closed. Their small house also collapsed. For almost two years, they covered their destroyed home with makeshift materials. Her children started working as porters at the bazaar because the family wanted to save money to rebuild their home. They were very happy to have become beneficiaries of the project. She said, „SNI and the donors have helped us realize our dream of owning our own home. The building materials you provided are a huge help in allowing us to rebuild our house more quickly. Thank you so much, donors, for this wonderful gift.“

Saberrudin is a 65-year-old man with 13 children. His house was destroyed in the earthquake. Because he is old, he can no longer work. Only his eldest son is the family's breadwinner, and his income is not enough to feed and care for all the children. Since the earthquake, he has been desperate to have the house repaired because his children are sleeping in tents. It breaks his heart to hear his children asking when their house will be rebuilt. He usually cries alone because he doesn't know where he will get the money to rebuild. He said, "For almost two years, I have been praying and begging God to help us rebuild our house. Today, God answered my prayer through SNI and the donor. Thank you for not forgetting people like us. You have no idea how this gift will change my family's life. You are generous and have a good heart. You truly are God's people."„
