The World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) has supported the founding process of the "Association of Evangelicals in Burundi (AEB)" as an umbrella organization for evangelical churches in Burundi. This initiative is a response to the significant social, economic, and political challenges in Burundi and the current disunity within the evangelical churches, which weakens their collective impact.
The main objectives were therefore initially the formal establishment of the AEB, in order to strengthen unity among the Protestant churches, to mobilize the churches for a holistic spiritual and social transformation, and to improve their capacity for social and economic development.
Key objectives included establishing a transparent and inclusive governing body, selecting qualified executives, and developing bylaws and rules of procedure to ensure effective management, legal compliance, and accountability. Registration with the authorities and rigorous financial oversight were highlighted as essential for legitimacy and trustworthiness.
To further promote unity, interdenominational dialogue forums, conflict resolution mechanisms, joint worship services, and collaborative projects are planned. Capacity-building efforts within the newly established AEB association focused on training church leaders in leadership, project management, and sustainable development, as well as promoting social justice, peacebuilding, and reconciliation within the community.
